# How to Notify Türkiye of Your Bulgarian Citizenship (Multiple Citizenship Notification)
**Turkish citizens who acquire Bulgarian citizenship are obliged to notify the Turkish authorities of their new citizenship. In Türkiye the notification is made to the provincial or district civil registry offices, and abroad to Turkish consulates. A document showing Bulgarian citizenship (ID card, passport or citizenship certificate) is submitted with a translation. The notification does not affect your Turkish citizenship; it only records your second citizenship.**

This notification is one of the steps after the Bulgarian citizenship decision. Many people fear that it will cost them their Turkish citizenship; this is not true. In this article we explain what the notification is, where to make it and which documents are needed.

## What is the multiple citizenship notification?

Turkish law allows Turkish citizens to acquire another country's citizenship. In return, the person is asked to notify the official authorities of the foreign citizenship acquired. As a result, your civil records show that you are a "multiple citizen" and which country your other citizenship belongs to.

The notification is not a request for permission. Your citizenship continues before and after it.

## When is the notification made?

After you receive the first official document showing your Bulgarian citizenship. This can be:

- The Bulgarian citizenship certificate (issued after the decree)
- The Bulgarian ID card
- The Bulgarian passport

In practice most people notify after receiving their Bulgarian ID or passport. We recommend not postponing it for long.

## Where do you apply?

| Where you live | Where to apply |
|---|---|
| Türkiye | Provincial or district civil registry office |
| Abroad | The Turkish consulate general or embassy in your country |

The application is made in person. Check with the office before applying whether an appointment is needed.

## Required documents

The list may vary slightly by office. Generally requested:

- Turkish ID card
- A document showing Bulgarian citizenship (Bulgarian ID, passport or citizenship certificate) and a photocopy
- A Turkish translation of this document; a notarised translation if the office requires it
- The notification form (provided at the office)

We can prepare the Turkish translation of Bulgarian documents with our [sworn translation](/en/services/translation/) service.

## If your name is spelled differently

In Bulgarian documents your name appears in Cyrillic and sometimes in a different spelling (e.g. Mehmed instead of Mehmet). This is usually not a problem for the notification, but the translation should clearly state that both spellings belong to the same person. See our article on the [name equivalence certificate](/en/name-equivalence-certificate-bulgaria/).

## What changes after the notification?

- Your civil records show that you are a multiple citizen.
- Your Turkish citizenship, ID and passport continue as before.
- All your rights and obligations in Türkiye remain.

You use your Turkish document when entering and leaving Türkiye, and your Bulgarian document in Bulgaria and the EU. We explain this in our article [do you lose Turkish citizenship when you become a Bulgarian citizen?](/en/does-bulgarian-citizenship-affect-turkish-citizenship/)

## Notification for children

If your child became a Bulgarian citizen through birth registration, the child's Bulgarian citizenship is also notified in Türkiye. For minors, the parent makes the notification. For Bulgarian citizenship for children, see [Bulgarian citizenship for your child through birth registration](/en/birth-registration-bulgarian-citizenship-for-children/).
