# What Prevents Bulgarian Citizenship? Criminal Records, Security Checks, Earlier Refusals
**The most common obstacle in Bulgarian citizenship applications is that Bulgarian origin cannot be shown sufficiently with documents. Beyond that, a conviction for an intentional crime, a negative opinion from security agencies, a forged or doubtful document and failing to answer a request for additional documents on time can lead to refusal. Most of these obstacles can be prevented with the right preparation before applying.**
A citizenship application can take years, so it is important to know before applying whether there is an obstacle in your file. In this article we explain the situations that can prevent Bulgarian citizenship and what can be done in each case.
## The most common obstacles

## 1. Insufficient proof of origin
In applications through Bulgarian origin, the key is proving your ancestor's link with Bulgaria with documents. Saying "my grandfather came from Bulgaria" is not enough. A migrant certificate, old civil records, a Bulgarian birth certificate and, if needed, a [certificate of Bulgarian origin](/en/certificate-of-bulgarian-origin/) strengthen the file.

## 2. Criminal record
The Bulgarian authorities ask the applicant for criminal record certificates from Türkiye and other countries where the applicant has lived. A conviction for an intentional crime can lead to refusal. Not every conviction is assessed the same way; the type of crime, the date the sentence became final and whether the record has been erased matter. ## 3. Security checks
Your application is reviewed by Bulgaria's Ministry of Interior and national security agencies. The "mandatory coordination" stage seen in the file tracking refers to this check. A negative opinion from these agencies is a reason for refusal. The content of this check is not shared with the applicant and cannot be influenced in advance; but declaring all information correctly and completely avoids unnecessary suspicion.
## 4. Forged or doubtful documents
Because forged document cases have increased in recent years, the Citizenship Council can separately check the authenticity of documents. This check takes months. If a document turns out to be forged, the application is refused and future applications become harder.

## 5. Late response to a request for additional documents
If something is missing in the file, an "Irregular / Additional" status appears and usually 2-3 months are given to complete it. If this deadline is missed, the application can be terminated or refused. Check your phone, email and file status regularly. ## 6. Inconsistent information
Names spelled differently in Turkish and Bulgarian records, birth dates that do not match or village names that differ are common. If these differences are not explained, the file may look suspicious. The solution is to identify them from the start and explain them with a [name equivalence certificate](/en/name-equivalence-certificate-bulgaria/) and consistent translations.
## If you were refused before
After a refusal no documents can be added to the same file; the only way is a new application. Applying again with the same gaps leads to the same result. ## What is not an obstacle
The following are not obstacles on their own:
- Not speaking Bulgarian (no language requirement on the origin route; see [the Bulgarian language requirement](/en/bulgarian-language-requirement-for-citizenship/))
- Being a Turkish citizen and keeping Turkish citizenship
- Never having lived in Bulgaria (on the origin route)
- The emigrant ancestor having passed away
## Frequently asked questions
Is a traffic fine an obstacle?
Administrative fines are not entered in the criminal record and are usually not an obstacle. If there is a conviction due to a traffic incident, it is assessed separately.
