Questions to ask when choosing a Bulgarian citizenship consultancy

A Bulgarian citizenship application is a document-heavy process lasting 1.5-3 years, so most families work with a consultancy. To choose the right firm, ask what the fee covers, whether there is a written contract, how the file is tracked and whether the firm has a real office. Stay away from firms promising “guaranteed citizenship” or a “guaranteed passport”.

Thousands of people apply for Bulgarian citizenship every year, and this demand has created many firms and intermediaries. Some do their job well; others leave families with unfinished files, hidden fees and phones nobody answers. In this article we list 10 questions to ask before hiring a Bulgarian citizenship consultancy and what the answers tell you.

Why do people need a consultancy?

You can apply yourself. But the process involves:

  • Finding old records in Bulgarian archives and municipalities
  • Apostille and sworn Bulgarian translation of Turkish documents
  • Resolving differences in names and dates
  • Preparing the application to the Ministry of Justice in Sofia or the consulate
  • Following the file for 1.5-3 years and answering requests for additional documents on time

Each of these requires correspondence in Bulgarian and local experience. A good consultant reduces lost time and the risk of refusal; a bad one can leave your file waiting for years.

10 questions to choose the right firm

1. What does the fee include?

Ask for the total fee and what it covers in writing. Are state fees, apostille, translation, documents from Bulgaria and the passport stage included? A low “starting fee” can be followed by separate charges for every step. We explain the cost items in our article on Bulgarian citizenship fees.

2. Is there a written contract?

The scope of service, payment plan, timelines and refund conditions should be in a written contract. A verbal agreement will not protect you in a dispute.

3. How and when is payment made?

Paying the full fee up front is risky. A payment plan split into stages (file preparation, application, result) protects you and encourages the firm to finish the job. Pay into the firm’s corporate account and get an invoice.

4. Does the firm have a real office and company registration?

An office you can visit in Türkiye and Bulgaria, a tax number and a trade registry entry are basic signs of trust. Be careful with intermediaries who only have a social media account and a mobile number.

5. Who will follow your file?

There should be a named representative handling your file. If you speak to someone different every time you call, nobody may actually know the state of your file.

6. How will you learn the status of your file?

After the application you should receive a file number. With it you can check the status yourself. Our Bulgarian citizenship file tracking system is open to everyone and free. Do not trust a firm that will not give you your file number.

7. Are “guaranteed results” promised?

Bulgarian citizenship is decided by the Citizenship Council and the Vice President. No firm can guarantee the result. Promises like “guaranteed citizenship” or “passport in 6 months” are the biggest warning sign.

8. Was your right to apply actually assessed?

A good firm reviews your family history and documents before talking about fees. If you are not entitled, it says so clearly. Be careful with a firm that says “you are entitled” without seeing any documents. You can also have a preliminary assessment with our free document review.

9. What happens if additional documents are requested?

The Ministry may ask for additional documents during the process, usually giving 2-3 months. What will be done in that case, and whether there will be extra charges, should be written in the contract.

10. What happens in case of refusal?

Ask in advance what the firm will do if the application is refused: reviewing the reason, support for a new application, refund conditions. We discuss refusal in our article Bulgarian citizenship application refused: what to do next.

Warning signs: stay away from these firms

Warning sign Why is it dangerous?
A guaranteed result Only the Bulgarian state decides
A positive answer without seeing documents You may not be entitled; the fee is wasted
Full payment up front Hard to recover if the file is abandoned
Not giving a file number You cannot prove the application was actually made
Payment to a personal account without an invoice No legal protection
Offering forged documents Leads to refusal and legal problems

The last point is especially important: the Citizenship Council can separately check the authenticity of documents. A forged or altered document leads to refusal and makes future applications harder.

What you should do too

  • Keep the originals of your documents and all correspondence.
  • Get your file number and check the status yourself regularly.
  • Make sure your name, date and place of birth are consistent in all documents.
  • Check your phone and email often; deadlines for additional documents are short.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply without a consultancy?

Yes. You can apply yourself. However, because archive research, translation, apostille and correspondence in Bulgarian are required, most families get professional support.

Is the consultancy fee included in the state fee?

No. State fees are paid to the Bulgarian authorities; the consultancy fee is the price of the service you receive. Ask for the two items to be shown separately in the quote.

Can I change firms?

Yes. If you have your file number and copies of your documents, you can continue with another firm. That is why you should always get your file number.
