Most delays and refusals in Bulgarian citizenship applications come from avoidable mistakes. The most common are insufficient documentation of Bulgarian origin, name and date differences between documents, doing the apostille and translation in the wrong order, expired documents and missing requests for additional documents.

Since an application can take 1.5-3 years to conclude, even a small mistake can cost months. Below are the 15 mistakes we see most often in files, with solutions.

Mistakes in preparation

1. Choosing the wrong route

Applying without knowing whether the origin, parent, birth registration or residence route suits you. For example, someone whose mother or father is already a Bulgarian citizen may apply through the longer origin route. Check the right route in our article who can obtain Bulgarian citizenship?

2. Not knowing you are already a citizen

Most 1989 emigrants are still Bulgarian citizens and do not need a new application. Filing an origin application without knowing this wastes years. See Bulgarian citizenship for 1989 emigrants.

3. Weak documentation of origin

Relying only on family stories. A migrant certificate, an old Bulgarian ID, birth records and archive documents are the foundation of the file. If you don’t know your ancestor’s village, use the ancestral village finder.

4. Ignoring name and date differences

Names may be spelled differently in Turkish and Bulgarian records, and birth dates may not match. If these differences are not explained, the file looks suspicious. Solution: a name equivalence certificate and consistent translation.

5. An incomplete civil registry record

A civil registry record that is not complete or does not show the family link. Every generation between the emigrant ancestor and you must appear in the documents.

Mistakes in document preparation

6. Doing the apostille and translation in the wrong order

Translating first and then getting the apostille. The correct order: apostille first, then a Bulgarian translation including the apostille. Details: civil registry record and apostille guide.

7. Expired documents

Documents such as the criminal record certificate are accepted for a short period. Preparing documents months before applying and leaving them waiting means they must be renewed.

8. Submitting photocopies or uncertified documents

Originals or certified copies are required. Uncertified photocopies are not accepted.

9. A careless autobiography

The autobiography in the application file is an important document telling your family history. It must not contain information that contradicts other documents. We explain how to write it in our article on the autobiography for Bulgarian citizenship.

10. Filling in the application form incompletely

Blank fields or information that does not match other documents slow the file down. See how to fill in the application form.

Mistakes in the application and follow-up

11. Not keeping the file number

The file number given after the application is the only way to follow your status. Don’t lose it; follow the status yourself with our file tracking system.

12. Missing the “Irregular / Additional” status

When missing documents are requested, usually 2-3 months are given. If this deadline is missed, the application can be refused. Check your file at least once a month.

13. Not keeping contact details up to date

Not reporting a change of phone or address means critical correspondence does not reach you.

14. Working with intermediaries offering forged documents

Intermediaries who say “we’ll find the document” and supply documents of unclear origin cause refusals. For choosing a reliable consultant, see 10 questions to choose the right firm.

15. Reapplying with the same file after a refusal

Quick checklist

  • I have chosen my route and checked whether I am already a citizen.
  • I have documents showing my ancestor’s link with Bulgaria.
  • Names and dates are consistent in all documents, or the differences are explained.
  • Documents were apostilled first, then translated into Bulgarian.
  • My criminal record certificate is recent.
  • I have my file number and check the status regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Can a flawed application be corrected?

If missing documents are requested during the review, they can be completed within the deadline. After a decision, however, no documents can be added to the same file; a new application is needed.

Which mistake most often causes refusal?

In practice the most common reason for refusal is that Bulgarian origin is not documented sufficiently.

Can I have my file checked before applying?

Yes. Send your documents to our free document review and we will tell you what is missing before you apply.
